The Art of the Summer Fragrance Ritual

There is a noticeable difference in how perfume behaves during summer. A fragrance you know intimately through autumn and winter can suddenly behave quite differently the moment warmer weather arrives. A scent that once lingered beautifully on a scarf or settled comfortably into the skin for hours may feel brighter, lighter, or far more fleeting in the heat. Fresh notes can seem sharper, richer notes may feel softer, and sometimes a fragrance can smell almost as though it has developed a slightly different personality altogether.

This is not unusual, and it is certainly not your imagination.

Fragrance is deeply influenced by its environment. Heat naturally increases evaporation, which means perfume molecules rise from the skin more quickly. This often causes top notes, the freshest and most volatile elements of a fragrance, to make a stronger first impression but disappear faster than expected. At the same time, summer itself can change the skin. Sun exposure, air conditioning, swimming pools, sea salt, travel, and dehydration can all leave skin drier than usual, which has a direct effect on how fragrance performs.

If you have ever wondered why your perfume seems to disappear more quickly in warm weather, we have explored fragrance longevity in more detail in another note Here, however, the focus is something equally important: not simply making perfume last longer, but wearing fragrance more beautifully.

Perhaps summer is not asking us to wear more perfume at all. Perhaps it is inviting us to wear fragrance differently.

At Chandrika Thomas, fragrance has never been simply about the final spray before leaving the house. It is about atmosphere, ritual, memory, and the small sensory details that shape how we move through the day. A thoughtful summer fragrance ritual brings all of those ideas together.

Fragrance Begins in the Shower

Many people think fragrance begins the moment the perfume bottle appears. In reality, the experience starts much earlier.

A morning shower may seem like the most ordinary part of the day, something practical and routine rather than indulgent or expressive, yet it is one of the first opportunities to shape your relationship with scent. In summer especially, this moment feels different. The warmth in the air arrives earlier, windows are often open, sunlight spills through the room, and steam carries scent in a way that feels unexpectedly immersive.

A beautifully scented body wash serves a different purpose to perfume, and that is precisely why it matters. Perfume is designed to project, evolve, and create presence. A body wash plays a quieter role. It introduces fragrance gently, setting a soft olfactive foundation while transforming a practical routine into something more intentional.

This is one of the simplest ways to begin fragrance layering without the process feeling complicated or excessive.

The emotional side of this is equally important. Scent is strongly tied to memory and mood, which means the atmosphere we create around ourselves can shape how a day feels before it has properly begun. A beautifully fragranced shower does not simply cleanse the skin. It creates a sensory transition between sleep and wakefulness, routine and ritual.

This was very much our thinking behind the new Marrakesh Body Wash. Rather than creating something that simply performs a functional task, we wanted to create the beginning of the fragrance story itself. Marrakesh is a fragrance filled with warmth, richness, atmosphere, and depth, and allowing that experience to begin in the shower transforms fragrance into something lived with rather than simply applied.

Why Body Lotion Matters More Than Most People Realise

When people think about how to make perfume last longer, body lotion is not always the first thing that comes to mind. Yet from a fragrance perspective, it is one of the most useful and often overlooked steps.

Perfume generally performs more beautifully on moisturised skin. This is because dry skin does not hold fragrance as effectively. When skin lacks hydration, fragrance molecules tend to evaporate more quickly, meaning the scent may feel shorter-lived or less balanced as it develops. Well-moisturised skin provides a smoother, more receptive surface that allows fragrance to settle and unfold more gradually.

Summer makes this especially relevant. Even if the weather feels humid, the skin can still become dehydrated surprisingly easily. Sun exposure, swimming, air conditioning, and travel all contribute. This means a fragrance that normally performs beautifully may feel noticeably less substantial if the skin itself is not properly cared for.

This is where body lotion becomes far more than a skincare product. It becomes part of the fragrance ritual itself.

Applying lotion while the skin is still slightly warm after showering helps support hydration while creating the ideal base for perfume application. It also creates continuity when the lotion belongs to the same fragrance family as the perfume, allowing scent to feel more harmonious rather than fragmented.

Our Marrakesh Body Lotion was created with precisely this in mind. Rather than existing separately from the fragrance, it was designed to sit beautifully within the same sensory world, extending the ritual while helping perfume wear in a more elegant and cohesive way.

The Art of Layering Fragrance Properly

There is a common misconception that fragrance layering simply means applying more scent. More body products, more sprays, more intensity.

True fragrance layering is rather more sophisticated than that.

At its best, layering is about composition and harmony. As fragrance designers, we naturally think in structure. A perfume is never a random collection of pleasant ingredients. It is carefully constructed with an opening, a heart, transitions, and a base that gives the entire composition shape and longevity.

A personal fragrance ritual can follow the same logic.

The body wash introduces fragrance softly, creating the atmosphere.

The lotion builds continuity and prepares the skin.

The perfume becomes the final signature, bringing character, depth, and presence.

When these elements work together, the fragrance experience feels polished and seamless. When unrelated heavily fragranced products compete, the result can feel confused, cluttered, or unexpectedly overwhelming.

Understanding how to layer perfume properly is not about creating intensity for the sake of it. It is about creating coherence.

This is often what separates a fragrance that feels elegant from a fragrance that simply feels loud.

Why Ritual Feels So Powerful

Of course, fragrance rituals are not simply about performance.

Part of what makes them so compelling is emotional.

There is something deeply satisfying about transforming ordinary routines into intentional moments of pleasure. A shower becomes more than cleansing. Moisturising becomes more than skincare. Perfume becomes more than an adornment.

Together, they create atmosphere.

This is where fragrance becomes part of mindful living rather than simply personal grooming.

Summer naturally lends itself to this idea. Longer mornings, open windows, slower weekends, garden gatherings, holidays, sunlight stretching into the evening. The season itself feels sensory, which makes fragrance rituals feel especially fitting.

Luxury is often misunderstood as excess, yet some of the most meaningful luxuries are surprisingly simple. Time, intention, presence, care.

A fragrance ritual offers precisely that.

Our Summer Ritual: Marrakesh

Some fragrances feel naturally suited to ritual, and Marrakesh is very much one of them.

It was never created to feel flat or one-dimensional. Marrakesh is a fragrance built with movement, unfolding in layers much like the places that inspired it. There is brightness in its opening, floral richness at its heart, and a warmth beneath that lingers with quiet confidence. It feels evocative rather than obvious, which makes it particularly beautiful to wear as a layered ritual.

Experienced through the full Marrakesh ritual, fragrance becomes something far more immersive than a single spray of perfume.

The body wash introduces the experience gently, allowing fragrance to emerge through warm steam and soft cleansing rather than immediate projection. It is subtle, atmospheric, and deeply sensory in a way perfume alone can never quite replicate.

The body lotion builds on this beautifully, wrapping the skin in softness while creating continuity between cleansing and fragrance application. This is where the ritual begins to feel less like routine and more like preparation, the kind of indulgence that changes how the rest of the day unfolds.

Then comes the perfume itself, bringing the full signature of Marrakesh into focus.

Worn in this way, the fragrance feels more complete. Not simply applied, but built. Not separate from your day, but woven into it.

Perhaps that is what makes fragrance ritual so compelling. It transforms perfume from something you wear into something you experience.

If your perfume feels different in summer, it may not be the fragrance itself that needs changing.

Sometimes, the answer lies in the ritual around it.

A thoughtful summer fragrance ritual transforms scent from a final hurried gesture into a complete sensory experience, one that feels more elegant, more immersive, and ultimately more enjoyable.

Experience fragrance as it was meant to be worn, layered beautifully from shower to skin with our Marrakesh Body Wash, Body Lotion, and signature perfume.
